Queen was a British rock band that gave us hits like Bohemian Rhapsody, Radio Ga Ga, I want to Break Free, Show must go on, the two stadium anthems, We Will Rock You and We are the Champions and much more.
퀸은 우리에게 무수한 히트곡을 안겨다 준 영국의 록밴드이다. (무수한 히트곡으로 곡명은 대체함.)
But what about their debut self titled Studio album back in 1973? Was it an instant hit? Unfortunately success is only measured by number of album copies sold, or by air time on radio stations.
그러나 1973년에 발표된 셀프타이틀의 데뷔앨범은 어떤가? 바로 히트를 쳤던가?
아쉽게도 성공이란, 라디오의 방송횟수와 판매된 앨범의 숫자로 밖에 표현할 수 없다.
Therefore, technically speaking this album surely was not a commercial success. Though as many say today, this album was and is still underrated. Gordon Fletches of Rolling Stons said “their debut album is superb”, and Chicago’s Daily Herald called it “above average debut”. Allmusic’s Greg Prato, later said “one of the most underrated hard rock debuts of all time.”
그러므로 기술적으로 이야기할때 이 앨범은 결코 상업적인 성공을 이룬 앨범은 아니다.
오늘날 많은 사람들이 퀸의 데뷔앨범에 대해 이야기는 해왔지만, 이 앨범은 여전히 저평가되어 있다.
롤링스톤즈지의 고든 플레쳐는 '그들의 데뷔앨범은 우월하다.'라고 말해왔으며 시카고 데일리 헤럴드 역시 평균 이상의 데뷔앨범이라 말해왔고, 올뮤직의 그레그 플라토 역시 최근에 록 역사상 가장 저평가되고 있는 앨범 중 하나라고 말해왔다.
Unfortunately, the generic public is not into good music. People like commercial music because radio stations and clubs play. If the DJ plays a track a 100 times, over and over again, then that is classified as a good song / album.
불행히도, 일반적인 대중가요가 바로 좋은 음악인 것은 아니다. 방송국이나 클럽 등에서 나오는 음악들 때문에 사람들은 상업성이 있는 음악을 좋아한다. 만약에 DJ가 한 곡을 천 번 이상을 틀었다고 해보면 그 곡은 좋은 노래이자 좋은 음반으로 정형화된다.
Though from the non commercial point view, a good album is when it sounds original and different from the expected, and when it still sounds good after 10, 20 or more years. Technique and lyrics also play a vital role in good music.
그러나, 설령 상업적인 요소가 없다 해도, 그 음악이 자기 고유의 음악이며 예상외의 결과물이거나, 10년, 20년 혹은 그 이후에도 훌륭하게 들린다면 좋은 음반이 될 수 있다. 그리고 테크닉이나 가사 역시 좋은 음반이 될 수 있는 중요한 역할을 한다
Queens first album can almost be classified as hard rock, heavy metal of the day with lyrics about folklore and religion.
퀸의 첫번째 앨범은 신화와 종교적인 가사를 담은 하드록, 헤비메탈 음악으로 대개 정의할 수 있다.
The first track, ‘Keep yourself alive’, is a positive song, with good rhytm and excellent bass riffs. Surely, the guitar solos can never be left out.
첫곡인 'Keep yourself alive'는 의심의 여지가 없는 노래이다. 좋은 리듬과 훌륭한 베이스 리프가 함께하며, 기타 솔로 역시 이곡의 매력 포인트로 놓칠 수 없다.
Another favourite is ‘Doing All Right’. This song changes many times, from light pop music to acoustic guitars, with some parts which can be classified as heavy metal.
'Doing All Right '역시 좋은 곡인데, 이 곡은 가벼운 팝으로 시작하여, 어쿠스틱 기타가 중간에 등장하고 헤비메틀이라고도 불릴 수 있는 요소까지 포함하고 있는 변화무쌍한 곡이다.
There is also a lengthy heavy song, ‘Great King Rat’. It includes long guitar solos and sudden tempo changes.
거기에 'Great King Rat'이라는 긴 기타 독주 연주와 급작스러운 템포 운용이 돋보이는 장편의 헤비한 노래가 있다.
Seven Seas of Rhye; a short song with catchy piano loop, is a half-written song. When the first album was recorded, this song was born but not completed, therefore Queen optet to add this part of the song to the first album, while the completed track was released in their second album.
'Seven Seas of Rhye'는 익살스런 피아노 루프가 함께하는 짧은 곡이며, 미완성곡이다. 첫번째 앨범을 녹음할때는 이 곡은 미완성인 상태로 녹음되었지만, 두번째 음반을 발표할 때 완성된 곡을 발표되었다.
Trivia: The band included a comment ‘No synthesizers’ on the album sleeve, as some listeners had mistaken their multi-tracking and effects processed by guitar and vocal sounds as synthesizers.
그 외 : 퀸은 몇몇의 리스너들이 그들의 기타와 보컬 사운드를 멀티트랙과 이펙터로 작업한 소리를 신디사이저로 오해할까봐, 본 앨범 슬리브에 'No synthesizers’라는 문구를 표기하였다.
As a conclusion, although this album was not a commercial success, with its release Queen showed that they will be a band who will lead the pack. A must listen to !
